How to Program a New Gate Remote

Need to add a new remote to your gate system? Here's how to program it for most common operators.

Programming a new gate remote is usually straightforward. Here's a general guide that works for most residential operators, plus brand-specific tips.

General Programming Steps

  1. Locate the operator's "learn" or "program" button
  2. Press the learn button (LED typically lights)
  3. Within 30 seconds, press the remote button
  4. LED blinks or turns off to confirm
  5. Test the remote

LiftMaster/Chamberlain

  1. Find the learn button (usually colored)
  2. Press and release learn button
  3. Indicator light turns on
  4. Press remote button firmly
  5. Lights flash to confirm

DoorKing

  1. Access the control board
  2. Locate program switch or button
  3. Enter programming mode
  4. Press remote button
  5. Exit programming mode

Viking

  1. Open operator cover
  2. Find receiver module
  3. Press learn button
  4. Press remote within 10 seconds
  5. Wait for confirmation

Troubleshooting

Remote Won't Program

  • Check remote battery
  • Verify compatible frequency
  • Ensure you're in range
  • Try different remote button

Memory Full

  • Some operators have remote limits
  • May need to clear old remotes
