How to Program a Gate Remote Control

Lost a remote or need to add one? Here's how to program gate remotes for the most common operator brands.

Whether you've lost a gate remote, purchased a new vehicle, or simply need to add remotes for family members, programming a gate remote is a task most homeowners can accomplish themselves. The process varies slightly between manufacturers, but the basic concept remains the same: you need to establish communication between your new remote and the gate operator's receiver so they recognize each other's signals.

Modern gate remotes use rolling code technology, which means the code transmitted changes with each use for enhanced security. This prevents someone from capturing your signal and using it to open your gate. However, this security feature also means that programming must be done correctly for the system to work. Taking a few minutes to understand the process before you start will save you frustration and ensure successful programming on the first attempt.

Before You Start

Successful remote programming requires a bit of preparation. First, identify your gate operator's brand and model number, which you'll find on a label on the operator housing. This information determines which remotes are compatible and what programming procedure to follow. While aftermarket universal remotes exist, we generally recommend using the same brand remote as your operator for the most reliable results and full feature compatibility.

Next, obtain a compatible remote transmitter. You can purchase these from gate equipment suppliers, online retailers, or your gate service company. Prices typically range from thirty to seventy-five dollars depending on the brand and features. Some remotes offer multiple buttons allowing you to control multiple gates or garage doors from a single device, which is convenient for Los Angeles properties with separate front and rear gates.

You'll also need physical access to the gate operator, specifically to the "learn" or "program" button. On swing gate operators, this is usually on the main control board inside the operator housing. For slide gates, the control board might be in a separate enclosure mounted nearby. You may need a ladder to reach the operator, and in some cases, you'll need to remove a cover to access the learn button. Have a flashlight handy, as operators are often in dimly lit locations.

Programming LiftMaster Gate Remotes

LiftMaster is the most common gate operator brand in Los Angeles, so we'll start here. LiftMaster uses a color-coded learn button system, with different colors indicating different security protocols. Yellow and purple buttons use Security+ 2.0, while orange buttons use older Security+ technology.

To program a LiftMaster remote, first locate the learn button on the operator. Open the operator housing or control box and find the button near the antenna wire connection. Press and release the learn button once. The indicator LED will illuminate and remain on for about thirty seconds, indicating the operator is ready to receive a new remote signal.

Within that thirty-second window, press and hold the button on your remote that you want to program. Keep holding it until you see the operator's LED blink, which typically takes two to three seconds. The blinking confirms successful programming. Release the remote button and test it by pressing it again to operate the gate.

  1. Locate the "Learn" button on the operator (yellow, purple, or orange)
  2. Press and release the Learn button - indicator light turns on
  3. Within 30 seconds, press and hold the button on your remote
  4. Release when the operator light blinks
  5. Test the remote
