Why Your Gate Opens But Won't Close (And How to Fix It)

A gate that opens but refuses to close is a common issue with straightforward causes. Here's how to diagnose and fix it.

When your gate opens normally but won't close, the problem is almost always related to safety sensors. Here's how to identify and resolve the issue.

Most Common Cause: Photo Eye Obstruction

Photo eyes prevent the gate from closing when something blocks the beam:

  • Check for objects in sensor path
  • Look for spider webs on sensors
  • Clear debris or vegetation
  • Clean sensor lenses

Second Common Cause: Misaligned Photo Eyes

Sensors must point directly at each other:

  • Check LED indicator lights
  • Steady light = aligned
  • Blinking or no light = misaligned
  • Adjust until alignment restored

Other Possible Causes

Wiring Issues

  • Damaged wires from lawn equipment
  • Rodent damage to wiring
  • Loose connections at sensors
  • Corroded terminals

Sensor Failure

  • Water damage from sprinklers
  • Sun damage over time
  • Physical impact damage

Control Board Issues

  • Failed sensor input on board
  • Power surge damage
  • Loose connections at board

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Visually inspect sensor path
  2. Clean both sensor lenses
  3. Check alignment LEDs
  4. Inspect wiring for damage
  5. Test with temporary wire bypass (carefully)

Important Safety Note

Never permanently bypass safety sensors. They protect against serious injury. If sensors are malfunctioning, have them repaired or replaced.

Temporary Workaround

Most operators have a "hold to close" feature:

  • Hold close button continuously
  • Gate closes while button held
  • Use only until repairs are made
