Updated for 2026: vertical pivot gates, sometimes called vertical lift gates, rotate on a horizontal axis and lift upward instead of swinging or sliding across the driveway. They are a specialty solution for tight driveways, steep approaches, commercial loading areas, and properties where no lateral or swing space is available.
Because the gate moves differently than a conventional swing or slide gate, vertical pivot projects need careful planning around clearance, wind load, operator sizing, safety devices, and foundation support. They can be excellent in the right situation, but they are not a default choice for every narrow driveway.
